I'm Still Curious. Tax Audits, Ever a Refund?

I know I wrote about this once, but no one commented...Just trying again. With IRS audits, do they ever audit and find you overpaid? I would think it could...but has it ever really happened? Anyone?

I don't think I've ever been through a full-on audit, but I've been contacted TWICE by the IRS because I overpaid. Once, I got a nice letter telling me I should have filed for the EIC, and would I like the $300 refund or not? That was right after grad school, when I made about $2000 a year working part time.

The second time was last year. I didn't apply for the Additional Child Tax Credit (not having noticed it), and the IRS kindly sent me a form asking if I'd like to submit the form after all. I did, and walked away with an additional $700 refund.

This year, I was much more careful not to omit any potential credits. At least I think I was more careful.

Claire, that's awesome! If I got a letter from the IRS and opened it to find a notice telling me I overpaid, I would be extremely excited.

I'm happy to hear that the IRS does notify people who have overpaid...
